Common Questions About Heated Pet Beds

K&H Heated Pet Bed FAQs

When people first learn of K&H Pet Products and the wide variety of heated dog beds and heated cat beds we have to offer, they often have a number of questions. We thought it would be a good idea to collect those questions in one article and answer them for your convenience.

If you have addition questions that don't appear in the article, feel free to contact us for additional help.

What is the surface temperature of a K&H heated pet bed?

K&H heated pet beds have two internal thermostats that will keep the surface of the bed at 10-15° F above ambient air temperature when your pet is not on the bed. When your pet lies on the bed, it will warm to a maximum temperature of 102° F, which is the natural body temperature of both dogs and cats.

Does my pet have to lie on the bed to activate the heat?

No, because our beds are NOT pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort.

How long can I leave a heated pet bed plugged in?

Our heated dog and cat beds are designed for 24/7 operation. It's actually easier on the thermostat if a bed is left plugged in and allowed to operate without interruption. Constant unplugging is harder on the thermostat because it's forced to reset itself each time it's plugged in.

This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards. For more information, please visit www.metlabs.com. MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as with any electrical appliance.

Can I wash a heated pet bed?

Yes, but only certain parts of the bed. The procedure will vary slightly depening on whether you have an outdoor or indoor heated pet bed.

K&H outdoor heated pet beds feature a removable faux fleece cover. Simply remove this and wash it on the gentle cycle with cold water, then line dry. Please do not attempt to wash the rest of an outdoor heated dog or cat bed.

The steps for washing an indoor heated pet bed depend on the style of the bed. If the bed has a removable cover, simply unzip the cover and wash it. Other beds require you to unzip the cushion, remove the internal Pet Bed Warmer, and wash the entire bed. Either way, items should be washed on the gentle cycle with cold water, then line dried.

The instructions say not to use an extension cord. Can I use one anyway?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.

Temporary use of a UL listed cord is fine, but consult your electrician for the proper cord for your application. For more information on MET safety testing, please visit their website at www.metlabs.com.

Can I place a heated bed or pad on top of straw inside a pet house?

Straw is a very combustible material and we would never advise using this material in conjunction with any type of electrical or heated products. Please remember not to place anything on top of a K&H outdoor bed or pad other than the cover provided. This product is designed to be warm on its own, which means your pet will love it even without straw.

Where should I place my outdoor heated bed?

Because of the inner coil structure and construction of our outdoor heated beds, we recommend placing them on a flat, stable surface. They should also be placed in a pet house, under an overhang or deck, or somewhere that provides shelter.

Is there an on/off switch?

There is not an on/off switch. Simply plug in a K&H heated pet bed and it will begin to warm automatically.
