Product-Specific Questions

What is the difference between a human heating pad and a Pet Bed Warmer?

The Pet Bed Warmer provides a subtle heat and reaches a maximum temperature of 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs & cats. A regular human heating pad will be much too warm and could damage a pet's skin and cause him/her to be afraid of the heat source.

Does the Pet Bed Warmer need to be placed inside a pet bed?

Yes, the Pet Bed Warmer should always be placed inside a pet bed. It should never be used by itself.

How much bedding should be between the Pet Bed Warmer and a pet's body?

There should be at least ½” of padding between the warmer and a pet's body.

What temperature will a bed reach with the Pet Bed Warmer inside?

The surface of the bed that contains the Pet Bed Warmer will be about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. Then it will warm to about 102°F. The surface temperature depends on how much padding is on the pet bed. If there is a lot of padding, it will be cooler. If the padding is thinner, the surface will be warmer.

Could I use the Pet Bed Warmer outdoors if it's covered and out of the snow?

While our Pet Bed Warmer is an excellent product, it is not designed to output enough heat for the cold outdoor temperatures of winter. Rather, it is designed to elevate the temperature of a pet’s bed that is already around room temperature.

For outdoor pets, we recommend the Lectro-Soft Outdoor Heated Bed, Lectro-Kennel, Extreme Weather Kitty Pad, or one of our other outdoor heated beds or pads. These are made for the outdoors and will provide enough heat for an outdoor setting during the cold winter months.

Does it matter which side of the Pet Bed Warmer faces up?

For this particular product, it does not matter which side faces up.

Do you have covers for these Pet Bed Warmer?

We do not make covers for the Pet Bed Warmer. It should be placed inside a pet bed with at least ½” of padding between the warmer and a pet’s body.

Are the bed warmers waterproof? We want to use them for a whelping bed.

The Pet Bed Warmer is water-resistant. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

For whelping puppies, you may wish to consider our Deluxe Lectro-Kennel. Its ABS plastic exterior is easy to clean and it features an adjustable thermostat.

General Questions about Indoor Heated Beds

How long is the cord?

The cord is 5.5 feet long.

Are your heated beds and pads pressure sensitive?

Our beds and pads are NOT pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet.

K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

Can I use an extension cord with this product?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.

Temporary use of a UL listed cord is fine, but consult your electrician for the proper cord for your application. For more information on MET safety testing, please visit their website at

How long can a heated bed or pad be plugged in?

MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards. For more information, please visit

Is there an off/on switch?

There is not an off/on switch. The pad is always on when plugged in.

For a garage, would you advise an indoor or outdoor heated product?

For a garage, we recommend outdoor heated products. They have the features necessary to ensure your pet stays warm in even the coldest of temperatures.
